About Us

We are a church that wants to be known as God-centered first and foremost. We live in a world where people naturally want to make much of themselves; where people love being the center of attention. That attitude is our fallen-ness and the essence of sin. Christ is the only one deserving of that kind of admiration.

This is one of the great truths of the Bible: God made us so that only when we are exalting and glorifying Him do we experience the greatest joy this life has to offer. This is why we are a church whose goal is worship. In worship, God gets the glory and we get the joy. He's the center and we are satisfied.

Grace is central to our life together as a church family. God's grace for us, an unmerited, free gift, is the only thing that allows us to find this joy. It is how we become followers of Jesus Christ. After we become followers, we still need grace everyday from God, because we are not perfect, and never will be this side of heaven. And because of the grace we've been given, we strive to let that same grace season our relationships with one another.

Because we believe the Bible is the Word of God, we seek to make it the foundation of everything we do as a church. Our worship is biblically based, our discipleship focuses on knowing Jesus Christ better through His Word, and our ministry and fellowship is based on the example given to us in Scripture.

Our Pastor

Pastor Brent Hobbs and wife Sarah
Pastor Brent Hobbs and his wife Sarah came to Severn Baptist in February 2008. They moved from Suffolk, VA where they had been living since getting married in March of 2007. Brent is a graduate of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY (M.Div., 2006) and Dallas Baptist University (B.A., 2003). Severn is the first church where Brent has served as a pastor, having worked with youth in several churches before. Brent and Sarah have a son born in March of 2009.

Brent began to feel called to full-time ministry when he was in high school and to pastor while in college. He strives to preach clearly and unashamedly the Word of God, and to explain it in a way that anyone listening can understand. Brent feels very blessed that God led he and his family to Severn Baptist Church. He looks forward to God doing big things through our church.
